Sad day on campusAn Illinois college campus is the latest locale for another school shooting. The sad scene yesterday played out at Northern Illinois University where a gunman came out of a lecture hall back room with three weapons including a shotgun and opened fire.

Police are describing a terrifying scene and students have spoken of, even after last year’s Virginia Tech Massacre, they still didn’t think it would happen to them.

Steven P. Kazmierczak, 27, shot 21 people and killed five during his rampage. University police Chief Donald Grady described Kazmierczak as an “awarded student. He was someone that was revered by the faculty and staff and students alike.”

As these tragedies always are, the scene at the Dekalb, Illinois campus is somber and one of shock. According to investigators, there were no signs of any violent streak with Kazmierczak.

The gunman had a passion for criminal justice friends say, was consumed with exerting “peace and social justice.”
