John McCain is the nomineeIn what was widely viewed as a given, Senator John McCain secured the Republican nomination for President last night with his victory in the Texas primary. The delegates from the Lone Star State put him over the magic number making him the candidate Republicans have to rally around to keep the White House in November.

Mike Huckabee, a long shot – but a crowd favorite, gave a statesman-like bowing out speech night. The former Governor of Arkansas urged his followers to get behind McCain and offered his services to the nominee in any effort needed to keep the White House for the Republicans.

Now McCain has his work cut out for him. Experts agree his party is divided and as he picks up an endorsement from President Bush today, Republicans are wondering how much an unpopular president could help their nominee.

One thing’s for sure, the Republicans will eventually rally around McCain, but what is fascinating to pundits and political science neophytes alike, this campaign is as exciting as any America has ever seen.
