New York's moment of nervesAlthough the damage was small, to New Yorkers, psychologically it was a hit.

In Times Square early Thursday, a makeshift bomb went off and very little destruction or injury was reported. The target was a U.S. military recruiting station and the Pentagon quickly shored up security at posts across the country.

Since the homeless window washers have been removed from Times Square, the area has become a beacon for the success story of New York City. Mirroring Las Vegas for flash in American landscapes, Times Square seems as if it would be a perfect terrorist target. The nerves in The City today were understandable.

But, terrorism was not to blame. Police, Homeland Security and the FBI have all said that this is a case of vandalism. Low grade explosives packed into a box shattered the glass on the office’s front door and very little else.

Whether this is an anti-war attack of a new kind remains to be seen. What is clear is the glass shattered around the poster of Uncle Sam saying “I Want You” has certain visual implications.
