In a relief to parents everywhere, young children in Arkansas are no longer able to get married. There are thousands of zany laws on the books across the country, and legislators in Arkansas have decided to take one off the books.
Until yesterday’s passage, it was completely legal to marry if you were just a toddler.
Signed into law by Governor Mike Beebe, the previous statute said that anyone can marry in Arkansas, regardless of age with parental permission. The law was embarrassingly revealed last month.
Elected officials across the state scrambled to erase this law from the books. The bill that passed Wednesday simply repeals the old law and does not clarify any legal status for marriages between adults.
