You loved her in V for Vendetta. And she was definitely the best part of those crappy Star Wars remakes. And other than a few stinkers (Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, anyone?), Natalie Portman is one hot ticket. And now she’s getting even hotter. Natalie Portman is set to take over the role originally offered and to Angelina Jolie in the upcoming film, Gravity.
To be directed by Alfonso Cuaron (director of the 3rd Harry Potter and Children of Men), apparently Jolie turned down the film twice and Warner Bros. was really sweating bullets over finding a bankable lead to carry this $80 million film. A few other actresses (namely Rachel Weiss) were briefly considered to fill this gaping Jolie void, but it was the buzz of Portman’s portrayal of a haunted dancer in Black Swan, that sealed the deal for Warner Bros., who officially offered her the part after seeing a test screening. Chalk one up for creepy ballerinas!
I do wonder why Jolie turned the film down twice, though. It seems an actress as powerful as her would have the studio wrapped around her finger, giving into her every demand. So I doubt it was a scheduling or money conflict. Maybe it’s just a bad script?
Only time and critics will tell. Gravity has been described as “Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D Cast Away-in-space movie.” Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn out to look like the sequal to Shark Boy and Lava Girl.
Gravity is also set to star Ironman himself, Robert Downey Jr., though (SPOILER ALERT) he apparently gets killed off early in the film. Probably so he can free his time up to go film The Avengers.
