Beetlejuice actor Glenn Shadix died in his Alabama home Tuesday morning at the age of 58. He will be forever remembered as the voice of Otho in the famous Tim Burton creation. His death appears to have been an accident. Glen Shadix’s sister, Susan Gagne, explained, “He was having mobility problems, and he was in a wheelchair. It looks like he fell and hit his head in the kitchen, and that’s the cause of death.”
Tim Burton took a chance when he cast Glenn Shadix back in 1988 who at the time only had a few small roles under his belt. His character Otho in Beetlejuice was a self-important interior decorator who was overly curious about the ghosts living in clients’ homes. Later in his career, Shadix had a part in Burton’s Planet of the Apes and did the voice of the mayor in The Nightmare Before Christmas. In addition to Tim Burton projects, Shadix had parts in Meet the Applegates, Heathers, Sleepwalkers and many animated series.
Four years ago he relocated to Alabama and retired from acting to be closer to his family. According to Shadix’s website, a memorial will be held Saturday in Birmingham.
