Crazy Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida has confirmed his plans to burn the Koran on September 11th. From a small evangelical parish called the Dove World Outreach Center (which sounds more like a bird sanctuary than a place of religious worship), Terry Jones is definitely not making small news. He intends to burn the holiest book in all of Islam which isn’t going unnoticed.
Jones explained that his demonstration would help us “remember those who were brutally murdered on September 11,” and would send a warning “to the radical element of Islam.” The only thing I’ll remember is some idiot’s quest to be the biggest idiot.
But what do experts think?
A top U.S. military official in Afganistan has made it known that if he were to go through with the demonstration, Jones will without a doubt put U.S. troops in harm’s way. But Pastor Terry doesn’t care!
Also voicing his opinion NATO Secretary, General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said that this type of act would strongly contradict “all the values we stand for and fight for.”
As expected, the Vatican newspaper contained similar sentiments. In an article printed this week, Archbishop Lawrence John Saldanha from Lahore, Pakistan stated that Jones’ plan is “contrary to the respect owed to all religions and against our doctrine and faith.”
The overwhelming majority or people have cautioned Pastor Terry Jones against doing this, but he’d rather exercise his First Amendment right than use his recent publicity to do something meaningful.
