Imagine being shot in your own home along with your spouse and children, not knowing if you’d survive. That is exactly what happened to Terry Caffey in a Texas town in March 2008. The triple murder of his wife and two young boys shocked the nation and is the subject of a new docu-drama series called Final Witness on ABC. The first episode aired last night and shed light on this unspeakable tragedy.
The attack took place during the early morning hours. Terry and Penny Caffey were shot in their bedroom and their two sons, only 8 and 13 years old, were shot and stabbed to death. Terry was able to escape and it make it to a neighbor’s house to phone for help, but his family was not so fortunate. The house was set on fire after the murders, adding another layer of difficulty to the already complicated investigation.
A family friend shares her thoughts about the Caffey family:
I just loved them to death. It was just like losing one of my kids when I found out about it.
Who would do such a thing? That’s what the town of Emory was wondering until the family’s teenage daughter, Erin Caffey, found herself at the center of the investigation. As shocking as it is, Terry Caffey stood by his daughter through the trial. Apparently, Erin and her 20-year-old boyfriend, Charlie Wilkinson, wanted to be together but since her parents didn’t approve, they figured their relationship would be easier with her parents out of the picture. Sick.
Final Witness is proving to be a worthwhile mini-series. It airs Tuesdays at 9pm EST on ABC.
