The hype surrounding HBO’s new drama Boardwalk Empire can’t be ignored. Being touted as the new The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire has caught our attention. With a budget of $15 million for the pilot alone, HBO knew that the show would deliver–and it did!

The show is directed by Martin Scorsese and is based on the novel Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson.

Boardwalk Empire is set in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States (via HBO).

On the beach in this New Jersey town, there is a resort called The World’s Playground where anything goes. The working man can make all his dreams come true, but often illegally. At the center of all the drama sits Nucky Thompson who is played by Steve Buscemi. He rules over the town as Treasurer but is part gangster and part politician — and will sell alcohol to anyone who will buy it. Nucky takes pleasure in giving out illegal favors.

So far, reviews for the show have been positive with many critics already looking forward to next week’s episode. David Hinckley of the New York Daily News says that viewers of Boardwalk Empire will be “rewarded with the best new show on television this fall.”

Catch all the action on HBO Sunday nights at 9pm EST.
