NBC premiered a heavily hyped Lost-esque show last night called The Event. While it keeps your attention, it is hard to say whether or not the show will take off or fizzle by the time Halloween rolls around.
The premise is this: The viewer is taken back and forth in time over the stretch of about a year and is shown a bunch of things that don’t make much sense. The show focuses on Sean Walker, played by Jason Ritter, and his girlfriend who are leaving on a cruise early on in the episode. Later, we see Sean on a plane after the cruise waving a gun around and insisting there is a bomb on the plane, which is strangely being piloted by his girlfriend’s dad and heading right for the President. At the same time, we meet President Elias Martinez, played by Blair Underwood, who is being briefed on a secret site up in Alaska that houses 97 prisoners which “may not be American.”
Too much is going on in this first episode, and all my questions are left unanswered. But we do know this: The girlfriend disappears while on the cruise and the President is spared his life after the jetliner heading towards him vanishes into thin air. Sound interesting?
So what exactly is going on? According to Blair Underwood, “What I can tell you … is that the event is something very eventful, but it is something that can potentially change the course of mankind as we know it. In a nutshell, that’s what is to come.” The producers promise that big questions will be answered early on, so, because of that alone, I’ll give The Event one more episode to prove itself.
