The fabulous Gloria Stuart, a 1930s Hollywood leading lady with a career spanning more than 70 years, has died.  She was 100 years old, and her birthday was actually just two days ago.

Stuart was best known for her role in The Invisble Man opposite Claude Rains, and, of course, as Old Rose in the 1997 mega-hit Titanic, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination.

When the script of Titanic was sent to her, Ms. Stuart told The Chicago Tribune, she thought, “If I had been given plum roles like this back in the old days, I would have stayed in Hollywood” (via NYT).

Stuart was born in Santa Monica, two years before the Titanic sank. She lived a pretty amazing life hobnobbing with fellow actors and artists, including Ansel Adams and Groucho Marx. She was also a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild and an accomplished painter in her own right.

The cause of her death has not been verified, but Stuart had been diagnosed with lung cancer five years ago.
