Since April, Andrew Shirvell, an assistant attorney general in the state of Michigan, has been writing a blog about student Chris Armstrong, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor’s Student Assembly President, and it has really pissed a lot of people off.
From the site’s first blog post, Shirvell writes, “Welcome to ‘Chris Armstrong Watch‘. This is a site for concerned University of Michigan alumni, students, and others who oppose the recent election of Chris Armstrong — a RADICAL HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVIST, RACIST, ELITIST, & LIAR — as the new head of student government.” Wow, tell us how you really feel!
Andrew Shirvell has brought up a variety of issues on the blog including Chris Armstrong going back on his word regarding campaign promises, the recruitment of incoming freshman “to join the homosexual lifestyle,” and hosting a gay orgy in October 2009. We all have the right to free speech, but that doesn’t mean your boss has to like it. Attorney General Mike Cox says he is pursuing legal action against Shirvell. Cox made a statement: “Mr. Shirvell’s personal opinions are his and his alone and do not reflect the views of the Michigan Department of Attorney General. But his immaturity and lack of judgment outside the office are clear.”
So how is this blog affecting Chris Armstrong? At last night’s Michigan State Assembly meeting, Armstrong responded,
I will not back down. I will not flinch. I will not falter. I will not succumb to any unwarranted attacks. What I will do is I will carry on with the utmost pride and vindication. I, along with the rest of this assembly, were elected to this body to represent the University. And nothing said about us, or regarding our personal merits, will waive our commitment to serve the student body.
Chris Armstrong is working with an attorney to figure this mess out.
