Dane Cook’s half-brother has been sentenced to six years behind bars after being convicted of embezzling millions from his famous comedian/actor brother. Wait, did anyone even know that Dane Cook had a brother?
Darryl McCauley, 45, began stealing from Dane Cook, 38, back in 2004 while he was working as Dane’s business manager. News of his misbehavin’ became public in December 2008. According to the Boston Globe, McCauley pleaded guilty to 27 counts of larceny over $250, three counts of forgery, embezzlement and other charges. McCauley even wrote himself a check for $3 million out of Dane Cook’s account. Wait, did anyone know that Dane Cook had that kind of money? And whatever happened to asking for a loan?
The ironic thing is that Darryl McCauley was a former corrections officer. One would think he’d have known better than to embezzle money, but hey, maybe he didn’t think he’d be caught. After his release from prison, McCauley will be on probation for 10 years and he must pay his brother back.
Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley commented after the sentencing:
For several years, Mr. McCauley abused his position as a family member to gain Mr. Cook’s trust, and stole millions of dollars for his own personal gain. We hope that today’s sentence will act as a deterrent, and our office will continue to investigate and prosecute these cases.
