SAN FRANCISCO, CA: Traffic was halted this morning for miles after a driver who claimed to be armed with a gun and explosives decided to stop his car on the upper deck of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Luckily, the police standoff has now ended and the man has been apprehended.
The morning started off like an ordinary morning for the 280,000 motorists that cross the Bay Bridge each day. But it took a turn for the worse when a 51-year-old mentally unstable man called KCBS 740 Radio. He told them he was on the Bay Bridge with his daughter and was going to blow it up. Apparently upset over the state of his marriage, the armed man decided to act like a lunatic. After stopping in the center of the Bay Bridge, he got out of his vehicle with a cell phone and a gun (which he later threw into the water). His 16-year-old daughter was able to flee the SUV during the police standoff and eventually he turned himself in.
Looks like the guy just wanted a little attention, but there are definitely more rational ways to go about that–ways that don’t inconvenience half the city. Anyway, there was a happy ending to this story. No one was hurt and westbound lanes were reopened around 8am PST. No explosives were found in the vehicle.
