Finding the cash to start up your own business can be nearly impossible. Sometimes though, good things do come out of bad situations. This was the case for Leah McSweeney, founder of Married To The MOB clothing, whose 2002 altercation with the cops paid off — literally. She was able to get Married To The MOB off the ground with the funds received from the police brutality settlement. And she’s even appearing on a reality TV show.
Read on for her story…
Leah McSweeney, 28, had her face slammed into a New York subway grate and two teeth knocked out by an NYPD officer after defending a friend one night outside a New York concert venue. She explains:
The cops were beating up a friend of mine outside the Hammerstein Ballroom at around 4am. I had a bottle in my hand and, though I shouldn’t have, I threw it. That’s when the cop punched me.
After the incident, Leah McSweeney received a $75,000 settlement from the NYPD and used it to start Married To The MOB. Her clothing line did extremely well and she even became a millionaire a few years back when she sold a stake in her business. Like other young millionaires, Leah McSweeney has decided to appear on the Bravo reality show The Millionaire Matchmaker, which airs tonight. She speaks of the experience:
One guy owned a tanning salon chain, and we just didn’t have anything in common. Patti told me to sit there, smell good, look good and make cupcakes. She might be right, but that isn’t me.
Well, better luck next time.
So all you entrepreneurs out there, don’t go provoking any cops. Things may not turn out so well for you..
