After the first ever murder in the cozy Disney town of Celebration, Florida, there’s more shocking news. The picture-perfect community has been rocked by a second violent crime when a man committed suicide during a police standoff this morning.
Talk about bad press!
According to an Osceola County Sheriff’s Office report, 52-year-old Craig Foushee who owned a failing security business barricaded himself inside his home Thursday evening for over 14 hours and began shooting at the police. When police finally were able to enter the home early Friday morning, Foushee was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Court records show that Foushee’s life seemed to be spiraling out of control. Last June, his wife Kimberly Foushee brought domestic violence charges against her husband and filed for divorce in September 2009. To make matters worse, Foushee filed for bankruptcy in April and the fact that his house was facing foreclosure proceedings probably didn’t help his mental status either.
As one would expect, this police standoff came as a major shock to residents who sought out Celebration, Florida for its safety, family-friendly nature and wholesome values, especially because it occurred just days after the murder of Celebration resident, Matteo Giovanditto. Eva Medved, who lived across from Foushee commented:
Just because this is Celebration doesn’t mean everyone’s perfect. People die, people get divorced, people get in trouble.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Twis Lizasuain says Matteo Giovanditto’s murder and today’s incident are not related. Maybe it’s time for this Disney town to change its name…
