Years after Brian David Mitchell snatched Smart from her bed at knifepoint and forced her to have sex with him for nine grueling months, justice was finally served.
Smart, who flew in to Utah from her Mormon mission in Paris, smiled as the verdict was read. Crazy man Mitchell just sat there singing hymns, Loudly. So loudly that he often had to be removed from court.
“I hope that not only is this an example that justice can be served in America, but that it is possible to move on after something terrible has happened,” Smart said, after she walked arm-in-arm with her mother through a crush of media.
During the testimony, Smart described in detail how she woke up one night at knifepoint and was taken away while her little sister watched. It is said that within hours of the kidnapping she was forced into a polygamous marriage with him, subjected to near-daily rapes and forced to use alcohol and drugs, to lower her resistance.
Of course the defense tried to play the “I’m crazy” game to get Mitchell off the hook for life in prison and just get sent to an insane asylum. He probably is buts, but a man like that should be locked up. Forever.
The thinly built, gray-haired Mitchell was routinely removed from the courtroom after loudly singing hymns and Christmas carols and taken to another room to watch the proceedings on closed circuit TV. He kept his eyes closed in court and never spoke to anyone, including his lawyers.
Smart’s prosecutors said that Mitchell was faking mental illness to avoid a conviction. Smart also testified she believed Mitchell was driven by his desire for sex, drugs and alcohol, not religion, like he claimed.
As the verdicts were read, the shackled Mitchell sat singing about Jesus Christ on the cross. Smart then turned to her mother and both smiled. Elizabeth Smart later hugged prosecutors.
So finally justice was served to the Smart family and they can put this nightmare to bed. Elizabeth said she plans to return to Paris, and finally move in with her life.
