But, sources close to the show say that no one was more shocked than his perky co-host, Kelly Ripa.
According to TMZ:
Sources connected with “Live! with Regis & Kelly” tell TMZ … Regis Philbin blindsided Kelly Ripa with his retirement announcement today… telling her less than 15 minutes before they went on the air. We’re told Kelly was “stunned” that Regis didn’t tell her well in advance. But one source connected with the show tells us, “She wasn’t upset.” Our sources say Regis felt if he talked about it before making the announcement, it would have leaked out.
Regis said he’ll tape his last show towards the end of the summer before retiring. Then he joked, “There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera, especially certain old people.”
Regis Philbin on Live & The Morning Show
Philbin has been the longest running host of ‘Live’ since it first aired in 1983, when it was called ‘The Morning Show.’ He has gone through a bunch of co-hosts, including Cyndy Garvey, Ann Abernathy, Kathie Lee Gifford and Kelly Ripa.
He said to the Live audience:
It’s been a long time,” he said, “and it was the biggest thrill of my life to come back to New York, where I grew up as a kid watching TV in the early days, you know, never even dreaming that I would one day have the ability, or whatever it takes, to get in front of the camera and talk to it.”
Will you miss Regis when he retires? Who do you think will replace him? My bet is on Kelly Ripa’s husband, Marc Consuelos.
