In a blatant disregard for human life, an explosion at Moscow’s busiest airport today has left 35 dead and many more injured. The blast occurred at 4:40pm Russian time and is said to be the work of a suicide bomber.

Get all the details on the Moscow Airport blast!

Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport is the busiest of the three Moscow airports and was the target of a terrorist attack. The international terminals became engulfed with smoke and splattered with the victims’ blood as shrapnel, ball bearings and other metal parts left travelers scrambling for their lives. A Russian state TV report said the handmade bomb, which is equivalent to eleven pounds of TNT, was filled with metal objects to increase the death toll.

Moscow Airport quickly turned to madness shortly after the blast and amateur videos uploaded to YouTube showed a horrific scene including scattered bodies and luggage strewn about. A traveler, Tatyana Popova, was in the nearby departures area when she heard the explosion. She spoke with the Russian station RT:

There were a lot of people crowded there because the escalators stopped. The staff organized (an) emergency exit, but the door was very narrow and people crowded there immediately. So, the staff started breaking the wall to let the people out.

Although no one has claimed responsibility for the Moscow Airport explosion yet, Chechen militants have been to blame for terror attacks in Moscow in the past, including a double suicide bombing in March 2010 that left 40 dead and wounded over 100 others.

In Washington, President Barack Obama condemned the “outrageous act of terrorism” at the Moscow Airport and has offered his assistance to Russian officials.
