The tenth season of American Idol has gotten underway and this week’s shows come to your TV from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As they usually do early on, this week’s episodes feature some of the best, worst and weirdest contestants. A few were outright wacky, others were excruciatingly awful and others just broke your heart. Idol contestant Chris Medina’s story falls into that last category.

After saying hello to the judges, we learn a little about Chris Medina’s heartbreaking story. The 27-year-old from Chicago was engaged to be married to his longtime sweetheart, Juliana Ramos, when disaster struck in October of 2009. Juliana got in a devastating car accident just two months before their wedding and has suffered brain damage and was left nearly paralyzed as a result.
Chris Medina has stayed by his fiancee’s side after the accident and his character came shining through in his taped piece when he asked,
What kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me most?
While his story is touching, many Idol viewers have sounded off. Some feel the producers of the show were exploitative to say the least and others say Medina’s story was what got him through to Hollywood. But if you watch a video of his audition where he sang a slowed down yet beautiful version of Break Even by The Script, you’ll see that his talent got him a golden ticket. Will he be the next American Idol? It’s too soon to tell, but atleast we all got to meet him and his fiancee through the TV. Story or no story, Chris Medina deserved his ticket to Hollywood.
