The fact that you’re able to read this means you have an internet connection. The internet is something we take for granted, but in Egypt right now, reports have surfaced that the government has purposely shut down internet access countrywide.

Find out why Egypt internet was cut after the jump!

What’s going on in Egypt?

According to The Arabist, “Egypt has completely shut off the internet” just hours before some of the biggest Egypt protests were scheduled to begin. Over ten thousand anti-government protesters ambushed police in the Egyptian capital of Cairo and authorities fought back with tear gas, rubber bullets and other anti-riot measures.

What are the Egypt protests about?

These Egypt protests are the biggest challenge to authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak’s 30 year-rule, reports The Huffington Post. Egyptians are demanding an end to Mubarak’s rule and are outraged at the poverty, unemployment rates and cost of food in the country.

Why turn off Egypt’s internet?

The reports of the Egypt internet outage came right after the AP uploaded a video of an Egyptian protester being shot. In what seems like government censorship at its finest, Renesys posted a blog with all the details:

Confirming what a few have reported this evening: in an action unprecedented in Internet history, the Egyptian government appears to have ordered service providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet. Critical European-Asian fiber-optic routes through Egypt appear to be unaffected for now. But every Egyptian provider, every business, bank, Internet cafe, website, school, embassy, and government office that relied on the big four Egyptian ISPs for their Internet connectivity is now cut off from the rest of the world. Link Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and all their customers and partners are, for the moment, off the air.

That’s really scary.
