Brooklyn-born comedian and actor Charlie Callas has passed away at the age of 86 of natural causes.

Charlie Callas had a long and decorated career including both film and television roles. He opened for for Frank Sinatra in Las Vegas and was a favorite of Mel Brooks, who cast him in a number of films including History of the World: Part I, Silent Movie and High Anxiety, where he brilliantly played a cocker spaniel. Callas also starred as Malcolm on the television series Switch from 1975 to 1978.
But how did the funnyman get started? Charlie Callas’s career began after appearing on a 1967 episode of The Merv Griffin Show. Jerry Lewis, who was a guest that night, found Callas’ comedic hunting routine hilarious and told Griffin he had to get Callas involved in his current project. Jerry Lewis was a man of his word and after that appearance, Lewis cast the budding comedian in his film The Big Mouth.
As for his personal life, the rubber-faced comedian was married to Eve Velac and had two children.
