National Wear Red Day 2011 is part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign and thousands of women will be wearing red today to show their support. The campaign was started in 2004 and is all about “encouraging, educating, and empowering women to understand their risk factors for heart disease and change the course of their future.” It’s a sad but true fact that one out of every three women in the United States will be affected by heart disease. Show your support and wear red today!
Here are some facts on heart disease (from CDC.gov):
–In 2006, 631,636 people died of heart disease. Heart disease caused 26% of deaths—more than one in every four—in the United States.
–Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2006 were women.
–In 2010, heart disease will cost the United States $316.4 billion. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.
