You heard the rumors, but it wasn’t until today that it became true: Katie Couric is leaving her post as anchor for CBS Evening News. Couric joined CBS five years ago and made history as the first solo female prime time anchor for a U.S. network news show.
So, why is she leaving? Find out… after the jump!
Couric spilled the beans to People.com, earlier today.
I’m really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we’ve been able to do in the past five years.
This announcement comes after months of speculation that Couric’s departure from the old school network was pretty much a done deal. While she has not specified an end date or revealed any future plans, she did say that she is “looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling.”

More rumors coming from heavy hitters Variety and The New York Times allegedly reported that Couric is planning to launch a syndicated daytime program in early 2012 and that the three biggies — NBC, ABC and CBS — have expressed interest in the program.
