Gabrielle Giffords’ was severely wounded in the head back in January after crazed killer Jared Loughner went on a shooting spree that left six dead and many more injured. Her incredible story of survival has captivated the nation and it’s no wonder that the media stood by as she sent her husband, Commander Mark Kelly, into space this morning.
‘Good stuff. Good stuff,’ exclaimed Giffords after the launch according to NPR. Her press officer, Mark Kimble, said, ‘It was a very emotional moment and very inspirational. It reminds all of us why we are so devoted to her.’
Gabrielle Giffords wasn’t alone at the 8:56 a.m. launch this morning. Her mother, her husband’s twin brother (astronaut Scott Kelly), Mark Kelly’s children and the spouses of crew members were also in attendance. Over the weekend, Gabrielle Giffords was said to have spent some time with her husband and exchanged wedding rings. While Mark Kelly is away, Gabrielle Giffords wears his ring around her neck until his safe return. Aww!
