When you think of Bill Clinton, the word vegan doesn’t exactly come to mind. But it should because the former prez has just declared that he’s gone vegan. Gone are the days of juicy steak dinners and creamy milkshakes. It’s for the best, though.
With two surgeries to unclog his arteries under his belt, Bill Clinton, 65, isn’t exactly a pillar of health. Well, he never used to be anyway. He’s done a total 180 when it comes to his diet and has packed his meals full of nutrient rich beans, fruits and vegetables.
CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta inquired if he was now a vegan and the former President of the United States responded, “I suppose I am, if I don’t eat dairy or meat or fish.”
But not so fast. Hardcore vegans may not agree. He didn’t specify if he eats eggs and does admit he’ll cheat on Thanksgiving, “I have one bite of turkey.” C’mon, he’s only human!
Why the change? Bill Clinton, like many Americans, says his decision to alter his diet came after realizing that watching what he ate just wasn’t working for him (via Boston Herald):
I had played Russian roulette because even though I had changed my diet some and cut down on the caloric total of my ingestion and cut back on much of the cholesterol in the food I was eating. I still – without any scientific basis to support what I did – was taking in a lot of extra cholesterol without knowing it. So that’s when I made a decision to really change.
Way to take control of your health! Hey, whatever works, right?
