With so many ways to watch television these days, it’s impossible to accurately capture which shows are successfully received by audiences through ratings alone: what about the people who record shows on their DVRs to watch them later on? Or those who stream episodes online, either directly from the network’s website or through a portal like Hulu? Apple TV, Google TV, purchasing episodes on iTunes…just because the episode was made for television definitely doesn’t mean it needs to be watched on an actual television anymore!

And even after compiling the results from all the aforementioned avenues, the numbers still won’t be accurate because one widely available option to watch television will still be omitted. Who out there is keeping count of the top ten most pirated shows on TV?

Thankfully, released its conclusions of the most downloaded TV shows on BitTorrent in 2011. The results are measured by single episode download, and the data was aggregated from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers.

  1. Dexter: 3,620,000 episode downloads
  2. Game of Thrones: 3,400,000 episode downloads
  3. The Big Bang Theory: 3,090,000 episode downloads
  4. House: 2,760,000 episode downloads
  5. How I Met Your Mother: 2,410,000 episode downloads
  6. Glee: 2,200,000 episode downloads
  7. The Walking Dead: 2,060,000 episode downloads
  8. Terra Nova: 1,910,000 episode downloads
  9. True Blood: 1,850,000 episode downloads
  10. Breaking Bad: 1,730,000 episode downloads

The list is quite accurate and harmonious with television ratings and general praise; however, interestingly enough, no where on this list are some of the “top” television shows of the yearThe Good Wife, Modern Family or Boardwalk Empire.

What do you think of these results? How much should pirated downloads factor alongside ratings and reviews?
