After an upsetting elimination on American Idol back in 2004, Jennifer Hudson has not only released hit singles and picked up serious sponsorship deals, but she has also developed an award-winning acting career. Yet with roles in Dreamgirls, Sex and the City, Fragments, Winnie and The Secret Life of Bees — not to mention an upcoming role in the film The Three Stooges with Sean Hayes and Jane Lynch — was Jennifer Hudson ever considered for the lead role in the 2009 drama, Precious?
Jennifer Hudson was not only considered for the role, but she also offered the opportunity…and turned it down.
She was asked to play Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones in the film, but passed on it because she was asked to gained weight for the role. She tells why in her book, I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down:
I had done that with Effie [in Dreamgirls]… and as much as I was moved by this film. I wanted to try a role that had nothing whatsoever to do with my weight.
In the end, Hollywood newcomer Gabourey Sidibe played the role Precious in the movie and received many Best Actress nominations for her portrayal. Of the role, she has said:
I don’t know what it’s like to be Precious, but–you know what?–she’s not an alien to me. Not because she’s a big girl. I’ve had to deal with difficult things in my life because of how I look.
She continues, “I have been made fun of for my dark skin by my older brother – he has lighter skin. In school the lighter-skinned or pretty girls would make fun of me. I don’t know what it’s like here or other places, but in the US it’s definitely a big deal. Darker-skinned people sit at the back of the church, you know?”
