Though so many celebrity couples got engaged over the holidays, not all of them will necessarily be getting married. After less than a month since announcing their engagement, Aretha Franklin has called off her pending wedding. So why has the Queen of Soul backed out of her upcoming nuptials? Read on for an official statement from the singer and her ex-fiance after the jump.
According to E! News, things between the 69-year-old soul singer and her “longtime friend and confidant,” William ‘Willie’ Wilkerson, were just “moving a little too fast.” The couple said in a statement:
There were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly.
The pair had gotten engaged over the holidays, and told the Associated Press that they were considering a summer wedding in Miami Beach, with a reception to follow on a private yacht. It would have been Aretha Franklin’s third marriage, and she was hoping to tap Donna Karan, Valentino or Vera Wang to design her wedding gown.
When news broke of their engagement, the then bride-to-be joked:
We’re looking at June or July for our date, and no, I’m not pregnant!
However, things between Franklin and Wilkerson aren’t exactly a laughing matter at the moment.
“There will be no wedding at this time,” the two continued in the statement. “We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it.”
Does that mean that they’ll be slowing things down for now, with the possibility of marriage still in the future? We hope so!
