‘Teen Mom’ star Amber Portwood was sentenced to prison Tuesday.

According to CNN, Portwood was first arrested on felony domestic violence charges in November 2010 because of incidents seen on her reality TV show — where she was shown shoving, punching, slapping and choking her boyfriend, Gary Shirley.

Portwood, who is just 22, was arrested on May 24 for violating her drug court probation. She apparently failed a urine test and then lied about it. Then, she “opted out” of a court mandated rehab program, which triggered the sentence for five years in prison.

Yikes. That’s a long time to be away from your kid.

I just don’t think she knew opting out meant five years in prison. (CNN)

Even though on paper she’s getting five years, Portwood will likely spend only two plus years in prison before being released on parole. Did you know that inmates get a day reduced from their prison time for each day successfully served? Who knew?

Hopefully she’ll use her time in the slammer to rethink her life choices and come out as a better mom.
