David Beckham‘s Olympic dreams were dashed this week when the sexy soccer star failed to secure a spot on dream team playing in the Olympics. And though he plays in the US, the team he was vying for was Great Britain’s squad.

Knowing how famous and popular (and also quit talented) Beckham is, it came as a huge surprise when he announced that he had not made the team.
In a statement released to the press, Beckham said: “Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me. So I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad. Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold. As a Londoner I was really proud to have played a small part in bringing the Olympics to my home town … and I can’t wait for the Games to begin and will enjoy every moment along with the rest of Great Britain.”
Was it because he was just too old to play? No, actually. On every team, three over-age players are chosen to participate. And old is a relative term: Becks is only 37.
It’s kind of a bummer – you know a lot more Americans would be into soccer at the Games if he were on board. Their loss!
