‘Jeffersons’ star Sherman Hemsley dead at 74

Sherman Hemsley a.k.a. George Jefferson of the famous 70s sitcom, The Jeffersons, has died at age 74. Though he was primarily known for his role as the strutting star in a 3-piece suit, he was actually quite an accomplished stage actor.

Hemsley began his career in theater, from dramas to even musicals, and his role on the popular sitcom can be credited to producer Norman Lear. We first met George in All in the Family and then as a spin-off in The Jeffersons, where he was ‘movin on up,’ as the show’s theme song so joyously declared.
