McKayla Maroney’s first vault was stellar, but the second, not so much. She ended up getting a silver medal, but the world – as well as Maroney – was stunned at what went down.
Romanian gymnast Izbasa won with a score of 15.191 points, the average of two vaults. Maroney had 15.083 points. Close, but no gold.
During previous competitions, some people said that Maroney’s vault was the best they had ever seen, and that she was the best vaulter they had ever seen.
Liang Chow, coach to Gabby Douglas, said “She’s so good that she’s probably the only one who doesn’t even have to perform to win the gold.”
Maroney still walked away with a team gold, but she was very disappointed that she didn’t win gold on her strongest area.
