Minimum wage spikes to $11.50/hour in D.C.

Minimum wage got a boost this week as several counties in the Washington, D.C., area approved significant baseline pay increases. Yesterday, Prince George's County voted to raise the minimum wage to $11.50 per hour following the same move by neighboring Montgomery County last week. The wage hike means workers in minimum-wage jobs will earn about 60 percent more than the current minimum wage in both Prince George’s County and Montgomery County, which is set to $7.25 per hour. Prince George’s County council member Andrea Harrison told CNNMoney that both counties coordinated their legislative efforts to "eliminate the competitive disadvantage" that would likely occur if one county increased wages and the other did not. The wage increase will happen gradually over the next four years, hitting the full $11.50 by 2017 in Prince George’s County and it does include some exemptions.
